The Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets will play a pair of preseason games this fall in Abu Dhabi. The NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2024, as the series is called, will be played Oct. 4 and 6. The NBA first held games in the United Arab Emirates in 2022. "We're excited to bring two of the best teams in the NBA to Abu Dhabi in the Celtics and the Nuggets," said Mark Tatum, the NBA deputy commissioner and COO. "There is incredible momentum around basketball in the UAE and across the Middle East, and we believe these games as well as our year-round grassroots development and fan engagement efforts will be a catalyst for the continued growth of the game in the region." The games are expected to reach fans through television and digital access in more than 200 countries a…

Scotland’s key problem remains unchanged: the lack of an X factor

The inquest attached to Scotland failing to navigate the group stage at a major tournament is at least novel. For too long, grim analysis surrounded an inability to reach championships in the first place. Steve Clarke’s team bucked the trend before being swiftly reminded of unforgiving environments; including in respect of ferocious criticism. November’s national heroes are June’s dinosaur-led duds.

By the time the kind of petty and parochial rows that often define the Scottish domestic scene return – we are talking a month here – Euro 2020 will be long forgotten. That is a shame. Clarke’s side raised the spirits of a country when sealing qualification on a memorable evening in Serbia. Scotland regained an element of self-worth v…

Women’s Super League: talking points from the weekend’s action

Earps hits landmark and delights Skinner

Manchester United’s manager, Marc Skinner, was full of praise for Mary Earps, who became the first goalkeeper to keep 50 clean sheets in the WSL. Her smart stop to deny Justine Vanhaevermaet kept their meeting with Reading goalless, before Rachel Williams’s late winner. “I wouldn’t want another goalkeeper in the world,” said Skinner. “I whispered in her ear, that save shows how big of a character and performer she is. She is a key part to why England have had their success too.” Earps was called into action infrequently and there could have been a risk of her switching off with United in the ascendancy but Earps stepped up when called upon. …

‘We’re a bit short’: Arteta says Arsenal may sign forward before deadline

Mikel Arteta conceded Arsenal are “a little bit short” in attack and suggested they could make a play for a forward before Friday’s transfer deadline after Gabriel Jesus sustained a groin injury. Jesus, who missed Saturday’s 2-0 win at Aston Villa, will undergo an MRI scan which will determine the extent of his injury, raising doubts over Eddie Nketiah’s proposed £30m move to Nottingham Forest.

Arteta said the Premier League has “gone to another level again” and suggested Arsenal may need to strengthen to ensure they can compete for the title. “We are really happy with the squad,” the manager said. “It’s true we had an injury with Gabriel Jesus and we missed him. We are a little bit short and if we can do something the…

Completely blowing it in the first round is good for business, history says

The loyalists in the overpriced seats at Boston’s TD Garden for Game 7 of the Eastern Conference first-round should’ve-been shellacking between the hometown Bruins and barely made it into the postseason Florida Panthers went from agitated, to full-on bittah in booing the 135-point getters in the regular season. The record 65 regular-season wins, 135 points, and the 22-point margin to the second-best pre-playoffs team made a series against the Panthers look like a cakewalk on paper. And after Carter Verhaeghe’s overtime wrist shot beat replacement goaltender Jeremy Swayman clean over his left shoulder and under the crossbar, David Pastrňák, and his friends can start practicing his golf swing. And if history is any indicator, that’s a good thing for Boston. No, I’m not drunk …

Report: NFL Might Not Come To Los Angeles Until 2017

An NFL team moving to Los Angeles next season has felt inevitable for most of the year, but that might not be the case anymore. According to a report from NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, sources close to negotiations have expressed doubt that a deal to move one-to-three of the Rams, Chargers, and Raiders to L.A. will be able get hashed out by March and presented for a vote. Rather, a move in 2017 seems more likely. From the report: A source very involved in the situation described it as gridlock […] What is clear is that there needs to be some sort of breakthrough to make next year in Los Angeles happen. All three teams’ current host cities are working on local stadium plans. Just as is the case with the hypothetical new stadiums in Carson and Inglewood, no city has a fully fleshed-o…
